Slowly the birds brightened and
resurrected Mama's life. Robert gave her a notebook to log in birds she saw at
the feeder. I would visit and paint pictures of the birds and outdoor scenes. I
made a living selling these paintings. Mama opened her home to friends and
children that wanted to see the birds and hear them talk. Reverend Margaret
Mead, the priest at our church came often to see Mama. Mama had been a lifelong
member of the church. Reverend Mead asked Mama if she would be willing to have
meetings in her house. We all became more involved in ministries. Mama cooked
cakes and cookies for the children, and tea for the adults. Reverend Mead
started a Bible study in the home. And Mama had a weekly story time for the
younger kids. My brother coached sports for children in the field behind Mama's
house. I gave lectures in the community on environmental issues, and started a
food for the hungry program which I am still doing.
Buddy and Lucky
changed Mama's life from stagnant to active, and she opened her home to others.
When Mama became alive again, my brother and I also became more involved with
people. Of course, the doctor and Reverend Mead were major factors in Mama's
renewal, but Buddy and Lucky made the initial change.
What is done in
this life can live on in others. When Mama died at ninety there were thirty new
children and fifty new adult members in the church, and hundreds of others were
helped, because GOD used a bird to get my Mama to open her home to
people.
