Welcome
to Rock Hill, South Carolina, population 50,000, the City of Music. At 1229
North Woods Terrace stands the very nice brick, nine room home of the Jackson
family. Spot who was black and white was playing with the squirrels in the yard.
All the surrounding houses were clearly owned by the wealthier citizens. The
area was well gardened. Faded chrysanthemums and marigolds amid bright scarlet
berried shrubs landscaped each lawn. As night was quickly darkening out a bright
December day, Mr. Jackson like all his neighbors had just arrived home for
supper. Relaxed by the color television set and with the evening paper in the
warmth of the living room, life was wonderful. Pink curtains, a plush pink
carpet, pastels, Mrs. Jackson's taste was delicate and luxurious - a French
Provencal motif. Mr. Brad Everette Jackson now 40 years old was the handsome
Hollywood type - sharp looking, and crew-cut -- a reflection of his 4 year
service in the Navy. He was always well-dressed, never smoked or drank. "A
really great guy," said all his friends. A real good husband and father--family
unity reigned high--intermingled with much love. At twenty-two he married and at
23 he completed his military duty and began his present career as a salesman for
Smith-Brown Department Store. The owners, Mr. Smith lives in Georgia, but Mr.
Brown is a local resident and member of First Baptist, a fine Christian
gentleman, and close friend of the Jackson family. Being a Scout Master for
Troop 53, Mr. Brown calls on Brad to join him on every camping trip.
Mrs.
Rosa Lee Jackson 41 years old, one year older than her husband Brad, is busy
preparing the evening meal in the kitchen. She is attractive, energetic, and
Brad's High School sweetheart. The telephone interrupts her cooking. "Hello,
yes, yes, -- O. K., see you at 8 A.M. By-By." Her closest friend and next door
neighbor Mrs. Lisa Sweet had just called to set the time for their almost daily
coffee hour get-together. Although the Jacksons ate out rather often and twice a
week Rosa had a maid for 8 hours to help in the home - still Rosa, part-time
saleslady in jewelry for Smith-Brown, social leader in several community
programs, and mother of three was overworked. She loved Brad very much and
married him at the age of 23. Their marriage was always strong and never once
could they recall any rocky ground. Raised a Baptist - Rosa joined the Lutheran
Church after the wedding. Brad who had no previous church background joined the
Lutheran Church while in the Navy, and the Church was an important element in his
life.
"Mother, I'm going to the gym after supper." -- "No, not tonight,"
replied Mrs. Jackson. Tom who was called "Thomas' by all the girls and "Buddy"
by all the boys his age - is 16, the middle child of this home. A little on the
tough side, sandy haired, pimpled face, and sixteen years old he was always
anxious to be going somewhere. With his hands in his pockets he joined his
father in front of the television.
The telephone rang again. "How long
before supper, Mother?" the sweet voice was Barbara Ann Jackson's, now
seventeen, very pretty and very popular, a heavy dater, she was nicknamed
"Moonlight Babe" by her friends. Her blonde hair and fair complexion accented
her beautiful young figure. "And Mother, what shall I wear tonight?" --- "You
have more clothes than Queen Elisabeth," butted in Chris. -- "Hang up the phone,
Chris!"
Chris, the third child whose proper name is Christopher is 13 years
old and is just recovering from the measles. He is darker skin than his older
brother, Tom, and is almost as big, because he is involved in more ouside
sports. Chris is another "tough" boy.
